WHAT MAKES OUTREACH SPECIAL?
|
The Outreach Program provides an experience unavailable in other private, special education
schools. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a unified learning environment with their
non-disabled peers in a public school setting while having their individual academic and emotional needs
met Outreach students follow schedules and attend classes such as: Foreign Language, PE, Health,
Library Skills, Art, Music, Computers, Test Prep, Lunch, Recess, etc., with the same co-curricular
teachers as their mainstream peers in public school classrooms. Students are supervised at all times by
our staff members.
Academic instruction takes place in our classrooms where small student numbers allow our professional
staff the ability to address each student in accordance with their IEP while following the N.J. Core
Curriculum Content Standards. Our classrooms are located within the public schools which affords
maximum interaction between program and mainstream students.
We specialize in designing appropriate educational programs for students with a range of
classifications and/or disabilities that result in behaviors which adversely affect their educational
performance.
Our population consists of students with disabilities who require a small, structured class size as
indicated in their Individual Education Plan. We serve children with many different classifications
and handicapping conditions including:
Multiply Disabled * Emotionally Disturbed * Other Health Impaired
Asperger's / Autism Spectrum Disorders * Physical Conditions
A THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENT
|
Outreach employs a school social worker, a licensed clinical social worker, and a licensed
psychologist. The teaching staff are trained in techniques which de-escalate negative situations and
those which maximize "teachable moments". It is our belief that a safe environment which fosters
self-expression and acceptance of individual differences is the foundation for learning to take place and
self-esteem to increase.
Along with the classroom environment students are provided other services including: Individual
counseling, weekly group counseling, social skills activities, crisis intervention, occupational therapy and
speech therapy.
Monthly Parent Association meetings, regular "Good News" telephone contact, and daily written
communication logs help to maintain the vital link between school and home. We encourage phone
calls, e-mails, and other forms of communication from the parents of our students at any time.
No child grows up in a vacuum, and our students are no exception. That's why we firmly believe in
providing them with genuine opportunities and experiences which promote the practice and mastery of
the many social skills they are learning in our classrooms. We take regular trips into the community for
rewards and learning experiences so that our students can improve their social skills with the guidance
of our professional staff members.
